“Color helps me show the atmosphere of a place, the life of people, their energy.”

- Pascal Maitre

This workshop led by Pascal Maitre introduces participants to the mindset and practice of photojournalism. Over four immersive days, learners are guided through the preparation, construction and completion of a photographic report, while strengthening their ability to create strong and meaningful visual stories.

The workshop takes place within the unique rhythm and changing light of Venice. Without needing to travel far, the city – with its reflections, colours and shifting atmosphere – offers an ideal environment for exploring colour as a narrative tool rather than simple illustration. Participants work on using colour to support emotion, meaning and storytelling at the heart of documentary practice.

With Pascal Maitre’s guidance, learners follow the full photojournalistic process: preparation, scouting, fieldwork and the essential editing phase.
The workshop concludes with a collective presentation of the visual stories created during the four days.

Bio

After studying psychology, Pascal Maitre began his career in 1979 with Groupe Jeune Afrique. In 1984, he joined the Gamma agency, and in 1989 co founded Odyssey Images. From 1994 to 2018, he was a member of the Cosmos agency.

His work has appeared in major international publications such as Géo, Paris Match, Figaro Magazine, L’Express, Stern, and National Geographic. While Africa remains his principal field of exploration, Pascal Maitre has produced significant reports across the world including the Middle East, South America, and Siberia.

Renowned for his humanistic approach and his mastery of color, Pascal Maitre is recognised as one of the great contemporary storytellers in photojournalism.
