"To tell a story with images is to write with light — to translate thought, feeling, and intuition into a visual language. You see something, you sense something, and little by little a story takes shape, frame after frame. Whether abstract, documentary, or deeply personal, the goal remains the same: to make the invisible felt."

- Jane Evelyn Atwood

This four day workshop invites learners to explore photographic storytelling in an inspiring environment. In Venice a city shaped by shifting light and moving silhouettes every street becomes a scene that nourishes observation and attentive listening two essential components of photographic storytelling.

Jane Evelyn Atwood shares her way of approaching a subject building trust and giving meaning to an image. Learners are encouraged to reflect on their own perspective to experiment and to develop a small personal narrative project throughout the workshop.

The workshop concludes with a collective presentation allowing each participant to share their project and reflect on their progress.

Bio

Jane Evelyn Atwood was born in New York and has been living in France since 1971. Her work translates the profound intimacy she establishes with her subjects over long periods of time.

Fascinated by people and by the idea of exclusion, she manages to penetrate worlds that most of us ignore or choose to ignore. She is the author of fifteen books, including a monographe in the prestigious PhotoPoche collection, and Too Much Time, Women in Prison, the monumental ten-year undertaking that remains today a reference for female incarceration.

In 2025, this book, Too Much Time/Trop de Peines is re-published in a new, bi-lingual and more complete edition. Rue des Lombards, her first story on Parisien prostitutes; Extérieur Nuit, a ten-year study of blind children ; Sentinelles de l’Ombre, on victims of landmines in five of the countries most devasted by this insidious arm – Cambodia, Mozambique, Angola, Kosovo and Afghanistan ; Pigalle People, the transgenders of a red-light district in Paris; or, DARYA, a Ukranian woman who cares for the elderly in Italy, and HAITI are only some of her books. She has won many of the most prestigious international awards including the first W. Eugene Smith Award, Leica's Oskar Barnack Award, an Alfred Eisenstadt Prize and the Ernst Haas Award. In 2022 the Minstère de la Culture in France bestowed upon her the title of Officier des Arts et des Lettres. Her images have been exhibited internationally and may be found in private and public collections.

In France Jane Evelyn Atwood is represented by the gallery, In Camera, and in the United States by L. Parker Stephenson.
