FRANCK BOHBOT

The Cinematic Everyday: Venice in Light and Colour
Finding Poetry in Light, Colour and Space
Festival Workshop
Sale price€1.490,00

« I collect the world as I see it, becoming both its observer and its archivist, an eternal tourist wandering through memory and light. »
— Franck Bohbot

This immersive workshop with Franck Bohbot explores how photography can transform everyday places into cinematic images through colour, light, architecture and human presence.

Over four days, participants will explore Venice not through its iconic monuments, but through the places, details and fleeting moments that reveal the character of the city: faded façades, quiet streets, reflections, interiors, bridges, shadows, unexpected colours and the people who inhabit them.

Bohbot’s approach begins with observation. Rather than simply documenting what is in front of the camera, participants will learn to recognize the atmosphere and visual potential already present in a place — and to translate it into an image with intention.

The workshop follows the complete process of making a photograph: finding a location, reading the light, building the composition, waiting for the human element and developing the final image.

Colour plays a central role throughout the process. Participants will explore how to see colour in the environment, create relationships between colours within the frame, and use colour development to preserve and strengthen the atmosphere of the original photograph.

Venice becomes a laboratory for this approach: a city shaped by memory, craftsmanship, architecture, water and light, where the boundaries between the real and the cinematic are naturally blurred.

This workshop is not a technical training on camera operation or software. It is about developing a way of seeing — learning how to observe, compose, wait and develop an image until it becomes a personal interpretation of the world.

BIO

Franck Bohbot is a French photographer whose work is driven by a desire to preserve places with a story; spaces that hold the traces of time, identity and human presence. From architecture and craftsmanship to everyday scenes of life, his photographs explore the way places shape memory and how light can transform the familiar into something cinematic.

His practice is characterized by a strong attention to lighting, atmosphere, composition and colour. Bohbot approaches each location as both an observer and an archivist, collecting fragments of the world as he sees them. His work often sits between documentary observation and cinematic imagery, finding poetry in places and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Bohbot's work is regularly published internationally, including in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, National Geographic, Vogue, Wired, New York Magazine, El País, Beaux-Arts and numerous other international publications. His work has also been exhibited and published in books, including his monograph Light on New York City and Back to The Arcade. Born in Longjumeau, in the suburbs of Paris, in 1980, Bohbot has lived and worked in New York, Los Angeles and Paris. He continues to develop personal projects alongside editorial and commercial commissions, exploring youth culture, urban life, architecture, memory and the cinematic qualities of everyday spaces.

Detailed program
Day 1 — Seeing the Place

Introduction to Franck Bohbot's photographic practice and review of participants' work. The first day focuses on observation and the discovery of photographic potential in ordinary places. Participants explore Venice through colour, architecture, textures, reflections and changing light, learning to identify a potential image before pressing the shutter.

Day 2 — Building the Image

The second day focuses on composition, light and human presence. Participants learn how to establish a frame and then wait for the element that completes it: a person, a gesture, a shadow, a reflection or a change in light. Through exercises in framing, scale, geometry, negative space and anticipation, they explore how to create photographs that feel observed rather than forced.

Day 3 — Developing the Image

The third day focuses on editing, colour development and sequencing. Participants work on their photographs to explore how colour, contrast, tonal values, highlights and shadows shape the atmosphere of the final image, then edit and sequence an 8–10 image series with a coherent personal voice.

Day 4 — Sharing the Work

The final morning is dedicated to the collective presentation of the participants' work in the festival auditorium, alongside the other workshops, followed by a closing discussion and shared reflection. The workshop ends around 1 p.m.
