HUGO COMTE

Image making, creative direction and fashion photography
FROM VISION TO IMAGE
Academy Workshop

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Creating a strong image begins long before the moment the shutter is released.

For this four-day workshop in Venice, Hugo Comte will open up the different stages of his creative process, from the first idea to the final image.

The workshop will explore the role of obsession, hard work, process and personal vision, but also the realities of creating within the photographic and fashion industries. Participants will look at how an idea is researched, structured and communicated, how references become a creative direction, and how a team comes together around a shared vision.

From developing research and creating visual decks to briefing models, collaborating with styling, hair and makeup, directing a professional shoot and working through selection and post production, the four days will follow the development of a photographic project from beginning to end.

At the centre of the workshop will be a fully produced shoot with professional models and styling. The creative direction will be developed specifically for Venice and shaped by the context of the chosen location, with an approach Hugo describes as luxurious, elegant, structured, composed, sensual and optimistic.

Rather than focusing on a single photographic technique, the workshop is conceived as an immersion into the wider process of image making: how to develop ideas, make decisions, collaborate with others, translate a concept into a set, and understand what makes an image feel precise, strong and intentional.

BIO

“I build my own worlds.” An architecturally trained photographer, Hugo Comte has a draughtsman’s eye for form, a passion for history, and a powerful storytelling gene. With a detailed conception of the final piece, he builds a complete reality in the simplest portrait. Passionate about his craft and unafraid of intimacy, Comte empowers his subjects by honouring their agency – capturing the unspoken hopes and fears in their gaze. He’s a multidisciplinary image-maker who uses meticulous composition to bring a singular sense of place and narrative, especially in his powerful group shots and beauty work.

PEDAGOGICAL LEARNING

  • Participants will explore the complete development of a fashion photography project, from initial research to final presentation.
  • They will learn how to develop and articulate a visual idea, structure references into a coherent creative direction, prepare a shoot and communicate that direction clearly to collaborators.
  • The workshop will also explore the relationship between photographer, model, styling, hair and makeup, and the importance of understanding how every element within the frame contributes to the final image.
  • Through the production of a professional shoot, participants will gain practical experience in directing models, composing an image, making decisions on set and responding to the specific context of a location.
  • The final day will focus on selection, post production and critical reflection, allowing participants to consider not only how an image is made, but how to recognise when an image is successful and how their own process can continue to evolve.

Detailed program

DAY 1

OBSESSION, PROCESS & THE INDUSTRY

The first day starts at 10 am in San Servolo Island.

The first day is dedicated to introduction and context.

Hugo will present his approach to photography and image making through the themes of obsession, hard work, process and the industry.

The session will look at the importance of developing a personal vision and understanding the commitment required to build a recognisable body of work.

Through examples and discussion, participants will explore how ideas develop over time, how references accumulate, and how a photographer can transform influences, experiences and visual obsessions into a personal creative language.

The day will also open a broader conversation around professional practice, the realities of the photographic industry and the relationship between artistic ambition, collaboration and production.

DAY 2

PRE PRODUCTION & CREATIVE DIRECTION

The second day is dedicated to the process that comes before the shoot.

Participants will explore research, elaborating ideas, collaborative work, briefing models and creating creative decks.

Hugo will share how a project can take shape from its first references and how a visual direction can be structured and communicated to the different people involved in a production.

Working around the creative direction developed for Venice, the group will consider location, styling, casting, hair and makeup, atmosphere and composition, and how these elements can work together as part of one coherent image.

The day will prepare participants for the following day’s shoot, giving them a clearer understanding of how preparation can create both structure and freedom on set.

DAY 3

THE SHOOT

The third day is dedicated to a fully produced fashion shoot.

Participants will work with professional models, strong styling and a complete production environment, putting into practice the ideas and processes explored during the first two days.

The shoot will be developed specifically for Venice, with the final location and creative direction determined closer to the workshop according to Hugo’s research and the possibilities of the city.

Throughout the day, participants will explore how a concept is translated into photographs and how creative decisions continue to evolve once a team, a model, a location and real conditions come together.

Attention will be given to direction, composition, collaboration and the precision of the different elements within the image.

DAY 4

SELECTION, POST PRODUCTION & SELF REFLECTION

The final day follows the images beyond the shoot.

Participants will move through selection, post production and retouching, considering how choices made after photographing can strengthen the original intention of an image.

The group will discuss how to edit a shoot, how to identify the strongest images and how post production can support rather than replace the decisions made on set.

The workshop concludes with a final presentation and a moment of self reflection, allowing each participant to look back at the complete process, from research and preparation to shooting and final image selection.

The aim is to leave with a clearer understanding of one’s own strengths, working habits and creative direction, as well as practical tools for approaching future photographic projects with greater intention.

The last day ends at 4 pm in San Servolo Island

The programme is indicative and may evolve as Hugo Comte develops the creative direction for the workshop. Specific production elements, location, styling and shooting concepts will be refined closer to the date in response to the context of Venice and the final creative project.
