A 3-day immersive photography experience through the hidden side of Venice

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

There is the Venice everyone comes to see. And then there is the Venice you discover when you know where to look.

When daylight fades, Venice becomes another city.

Stone façades emerge against a deepening blue sky. Reflections stretch across the canals. Windows, streetlights and illuminated passages begin to shape the architecture, while silhouettes move through spaces that felt completely different only an hour earlier.

Venice by Night is a three day immersive photography workshop dedicated to blue hour, low light and night photography.

Participants learn how to photograph the gradual transformation of Venice from the final light of day into darkness, working with reflections, architecture, movement, artificial light and human presence. The workshop combines guided shooting sessions with practical teaching and daily image reviews, allowing each participant to develop both technical confidence and a more personal interpretation of the city.

The emphasis is not simply on mastering difficult lighting conditions. It is about understanding how darkness changes the way we see, compose and tell a story.

Through evening and night sessions, and depending on season and conditions, an early morning blue hour session, participants explore the relationship between natural and artificial light while developing a small coherent body of work around their own experience of Venice.

Additional sessions will be scheduled throughout 2027. For more information and upcoming dates, please contact jeanne@veneziaphoto.org.

Each participant will leave the workshop with a printed photograph of their own work, selected during the final editing session.

About Venezia Photo Academy

Discover Venice through the eyes of exceptional photographers.

Building on ten years of experience organising photography workshops in Venice, Venezia Photo introduces its Academy: a year-round programme of immersive photographic experiences led by renowned professional photographers who know the city intimately.

Laurent Dequick, a photographer and architect by training, is the author of Grand Canal, published by Éditions du Chêne, a remarkable photographic book featuring a 38-metre panoramic exploration of Venice’s iconic waterway.

Ludwig Favre, an internationally recognised fine art photographer known for his distinctive use of colour, light and architecture, has exhibited in Paris, New York and Tokyo. He has collaborated with Leica, Adobe, Hasselblad and Condé Nast, and his work is represented in the permanent collection of the Ford Foundation in New York.

Each workshop is led by either Laurent Dequick or Ludwig Favre, offering participants an exclusive experience alongside an accomplished photographer, the opportunity to refine their photographic skills and discover a side of Venice beyond the familiar sights.

More photographers will soon join the Academy, bringing fresh artistic perspectives and enriching the range of experiences offered throughout the year.

Participants will learn how to understand the evolution of light from late afternoon through blue hour and night, and how to adapt exposure, ISO, aperture and shutter speed to changing conditions.

They will develop greater confidence in preserving highlights, interpreting shadow areas and balancing natural and artificial light.

The workshop also introduces long exposure techniques for working with water, reflections and movement, while exploring handheld photography when greater mobility is required.

Beyond technique, participants will learn how to create a coherent visual selection reflecting their own interpretation of Venice at night

Detailed program

DAY 1 - OPENING YOUR EYES

FROM DAYLIGHT TO BLUE HOUR

Afternoon | Welcome & Preparation

The workshop begins on San Servolo with an introduction to the programme, individual expectations and the specific challenges of photographing in low light.

Participants review essential settings including exposure, ISO, autofocus in low light, white balance and RAW capture.

The session also introduces tripod setup and the principles of long exposure before moving into the city.

Late Afternoon | Reading the Changing Light

The first shooting session begins while daylight is still present.

Participants have time to observe their surroundings, identify compositions and understand how natural light interacts with architecture, water and reflections before darkness arrives.

The photographer works individually with participants on framing, exposure and anticipating how a scene might evolve as the light changes.

Blue Hour | Photographing the Transition

As daylight fades, participants remain attentive to the changing balance between sky, city lights and reflections.

Working from selected viewpoints, they explore how the same composition can produce very different images within only a few minutes.

The emphasis is on timing, exposure and understanding when the atmosphere of a scene reaches its strongest visual moment.

Evening | Venice After Dark

The session continues into the night.

Participants work with illuminated passages, architecture, silhouettes, reflections and movement, alternating between tripod based techniques and handheld photography.

DAY 2 - DEVELOPING A NIGHT VISION

Late Morning | Image Review & Technical Refinement

The day begins with a review of photographs made the previous evening.

The group discusses composition, sharpness, exposure, colour and visual intention.

Technical challenges encountered in the field become the starting point for a practical introduction to digital processing, including white balance, contrast, highlight recovery and noise management.

Afternoon | Building a Personal Direction

Each participant begins identifying a personal visual thread for the second shooting session.

This may emerge through reflections, human presence, architecture, movement, illuminated thresholds or the relationship between darkness and colour.

The aim is to move beyond isolated successful images and begin building a more coherent interpretation of Venice at night.

Blue Hour & Evening | Second Shooting Session

Participants return to the city with clearer photographic intentions.

The session allows them to deepen their use of long exposure, movement, composition and low light techniques while working more independently.

Individual guidance continues throughout the evening according to each participant’s developing direction.

Optional Early Morning Session

Depending on season, weather and transport conditions, an early blue hour session may be integrated into the programme.

Photographing Venice before sunrise provides a completely different relationship to light and offers the opportunity to compare the atmosphere of morning blue hour with that of the evening.

DAY 3 - ONE LAST LIGHT

9:00 am to 12:00 pm | Final Shooting Session

The final morning begins with one last photographic session in Venice.

Participants return to the city with greater confidence and a clearer understanding of their own visual language.

The aim is to complete a developing series, strengthen a missing element or simply respond to the morning light with everything learned during the previous sessions.

12:00 to 1:00 pm | Return to San Servolo & Lunch

Return to San Servolo for lunch together and an informal conversation about the shooting experience.

1:00 to 3:30 pm | Editing & Final Selection

Participants review their strongest photographs from the workshop and refine a coherent final selection.

The session focuses on exposure, colour, contrast, consistency and preserving the atmosphere captured in camera.

3:30 to 5:00 pm | Final Presentation

Each participant presents their final selection to the group.

The workshop concludes with individual and collective feedback, discussion around photographic choices and practical guidance on how to continue developing a personal approach to night photography.

The workshop ends at 5:00 pm.

The programme is indicative and may be adjusted by Venezia Photo and the photographer according to weather conditions, light, transportation schedules, the pace of the group and the needs of participants.
