HARRY GRUYAERT

A sense of a place
Sale price€2.000,00 Finance my workshop

Harry Gruyaert very rarely offers workshops. This four day course organised in Venice provides participants with an in depth learning environment, in direct contact with a photographer whose influence has left a lasting mark on the history of colour photography in Europe.

For more than fifty years, Harry Gruyaert has developed an approach rooted in careful observation of spaces, an intimate relationship with colour, and the way a place reveals itself through light and everyday situations. His work questions our perception of urban environments and the position of the viewer when faced with images that are both open and enigmatic.

The workshop is part of a reflection entitled A Sense of Place, focusing on photography’s ability to convey the experience of a place. Venice offers a particularly rich field of exploration, thanks to the complexity of its circulation, the diversity of its atmospheres, and the singularity of its urban landscapes.

Throughout the course, participants develop a personal photographic project, which will be presented at the end of the workshop.

Bio

Harry Gruyaert was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1941. He studied at the Brussels School of Film and Photography from 1959 to 1962, before settling in Paris as a photographer, while working as a freelance director of photography for Flemish television between 1963 and 1967.

In 1969, he made the first of many trips to Morocco. From 1970 to 1972, he lived in London, a period marked by significant visual experimentation. During this time, he notably chose to “cover” the 1972 Munich Olympic Games as well as the first Apollo missions by photographing images from a defective television screen, manipulating colour in the process. Between 1973 and 1980, he began a long term body of work on Belgium, initially in black and white and later in colour.

Harry Gruyaert joined Magnum Photos in 1981 and continued to travel extensively, particularly throughout Asia, the United States, the Middle East and Russia. For more than thirty years, from Belgium to Morocco, from India to Egypt, he has recorded the subtle chromatic vibrations of both Eastern and Western light. Far removed from any form of stereotypical exoticism, his vision of distant places places the viewer at the heart of singular and sometimes enigmatic atmospheres.

In the 2000s, Harry Gruyaert moved away from analogue photography in favour of digital. Having always paid close attention to the quality of his prints, previously produced in Cibachrome and occasionally in dye transfer, he was an early experimenter with inkjet printing. Better suited to revealing the richness of tonal nuance present in his images, digital printing opened new possibilities for his work, bringing it closer to his original intention: to give colour the means to fully assert its true existence.
