TERESA FREITAS

Colour & Storytelling
Visual Storytelling in Colour
Festival Workshop
Sale price€1.290,00 Finance my workshop

This workshop led by Teresa Freitas explores the use of colour as a central tool for visual storytelling. Over four days, learners create a photographic series in Venice and discover how colour can structure an image, connect different subjects, and bring coherence to a narrative.

The workshop combines photographic walks, guided editing sessions and individual support. Learners explore several areas of Venice — markets, lively neighbourhoods or quieter spaces — and select the locations that best suit the story they wish to develop. Each participant works on creating a short, personal photographic narrative.

The workshop concludes with a collective presentation. All the images produced are gathered and sequenced to create a simple yet coherent overview, linking the different narratives through the use of colour.

Whether you photograph people, architecture, street moments or everyday details, this workshop will help you turn colour into a powerful tool for storytelling.

Bio

Teresa Freitas (b. 1990) is a Portuguese photographer and colourist whose work moves between fine art, documentary, and street photography. She often investigates how colour shapes composition, place, atmosphere, and the viewer’s aesthetic response.

Initially drawn to black-and-white film, Teresa later followed influences from painting and cinema, applying colour theory and harmony to develop a distinctive visual approach that has been recognised in various international publications.

In her ongoing series Cinematica, she documents places and subjects around the world, exploring how colour can guide perception and structure an image. Her first solo exhibition of this work took place in 2022 in Seoul, attracting more than 160,000 visitors over three months.

After several years working in commercial photography—with collaborations including Leica, Adobe, Pantone and Dior—she is now focused on both short- and long-term documentary projects. Her current work examines cultural and symbolic relationships with nature, particularly through flowers, combining cultural research with photographic documentation in a personal and artistic visual language.

Detailed program
Day 1

Morning

Participants arrive before noon and settle into the workshop environment, taking time to familiarise themselves with the space and with one another.

Afternoon

The workshop opens with a welcome session and an introduction to Teresa’s approach to colour as a narrative language in photography. Teresa shares key references and examples from her work, offering a first immersion into how colour can shape meaning, guide the viewer and create coherence within a story. A collective review of participants’ portfolios follows, allowing Teresa to understand each person’s visual tendencies. Together, the group discusses expectations and defines the individual goals for the workshop. The afternoon concludes with an introduction to the role of colour, composition and context in building a strong photographic narrative.

Day 2

Morning

The first fieldwork session begins with a colour-focused photowalk in Venice. Participants explore everyday life, observe the natural palette of the city and learn to identify chromatic relationships that can support storytelling. Teresa provides guidance on how to look for recurring tonal elements, anticipate interactions between colour and light and build intention before pressing the shutter.

Afternoon

Shooting continues across selected areas of Venice, encouraging participants to develop a consistent way of seeing through colour. Teresa offers individual feedback throughout the walk, helping refine framing, strengthen the use of colour as a structuring element and clarify the emerging narrative of each participant’s mini-series.

Day 3

Morning

The group returns to the field for further photographic exploration, deepening ongoing stories or shifting to new angles within the same chosen locations. The focus is on rhythm, chromatic coherence and the ability to connect diverse subjects through colour. Participants work on enriching their series with variety while maintaining unity.

Afternoon

The afternoon is dedicated to editing. Teresa guides participants through a first selection of their images, working on building a visual sequence that makes sense both narratively and chromatically. The session focuses on tightening the edit, identifying the strongest images and understanding how colour creates transitions, contrasts and meaning. Each participant prepares a concise sequence for the final presentation.

Day 4

Morning

Participants gather for a collective presentation of the work produced during the workshop. Each series is discussed with attention to colour, storytelling and overall coherence. The group shares feedback, constructive critique and reflections on their evolving photographic approach. Teresa highlights strengths, areas for improvement and possible directions for future work.

Afternoon

The workshop concludes with final exchanges, closing remarks and a moment to reflect on the experience shared in Venice.
